Khurai Residents Shutdown Manipur Streets Over Paonam Daneshwar Death

Imphal: Residents of Khurai in Manipur’s Imphal East district halted normal life with a protest shutdown lasting between 24 and 48 hours. The Joint Action Committee on the Unnatural Death of Paonam Daneshwar organized the strike to demand accountability for the 58-year-old’s death. Protesters blocked roads and stopped traffic throughout the Khurai Assembly constituency to pressure authorities.

Daneshwar, a resident of Khurai Kongpal Sajor Leikai, died on October 1 after reportedly consuming insecticide on September 30. He had previously appeared before the Cyber Crime Police Station on September 29. He was answering a complaint regarding allegedly obscene and derogatory remarks made against a female elected representative.

His family filed a formal complaint at the Porompat Police Station alleging criminal intimidation, harassment, and conspiracy. Protesters argue that relentless online trolling and abuse continued even while legal proceedings were active. One protester stated, “We admit that the deceased used derogatory remarks against one of the woman elected representatives, and that was wrong. However, continuously harassing him on social media while the legal process was underway was also unacceptable.”

The demonstrators want police to look past the original complaint and investigate those behind the social media harassment. They argue the constant digital abuse pushed the man to take his life. The claims remain under investigation by authorities as the local community demands justice.
