ENPO Demands Urgent Policing and Relief After Nagaland Communal Violence

Kohima: The Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) blames government negligence for the recent communal violence in Kiusam, Pungro, and Shamator. A delegation visited affected areas on October 11 and 12 to meet with the Yimkhiung and Tikhir tribal councils. Tensions flared while state officials watched. The ENPO stated that during its peace mission tour, it "observed serious lapses on the part of the administrative machinery in governance and in maintenance of law and order; otherwise, such conflicts could have been avoided."

The organization now demands three immediate fixes from the state government. They want an Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) posted permanently in Kiusam instead of relying on the EAC from Pungro. They also require a new police outpost in Kiusam staffed with proper manpower. Finally, the group wants relief and rehabilitation for families displaced by the fighting.

The ENPO praised the work of YTC President Throngso Yimkhiung and TTC President Timong Tikhir for trying to stop the violence. They also credited district police, the Shamator and Kiphire administrations, and the Commanding Officer of the 30 Assam Rifles for managing the situation despite thin resources. The United Sangtam Likhüm Pümji and President Aliba Sangtam earned special thanks for housing refugees in Kiphire.

Schools must stay open. The ENPO insists that authorities protect the academic careers of affected students. They also called on churches across the region to pray for lasting peace.
