Kohima: Nagaland faces persistent threats from floods and landslides. Recent monsoon seasons have ravaged roads, homes, agricultural plots, and public infrastructure. The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) marked the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2026 at the Capital Convention Centre in Kohima this Tuesday to address these mounting risks.
Officials focused on the theme: Resilience Starts at Home. This message targets individuals and families to take charge by learning evacuation routes, stocking emergency supplies, and heeding official warnings. Preparedness prevents catastrophe. Z Nyusietho Nyuthe, Advisor for NSDMA and Inland Waterways, led the event by demanding better public awareness and coordinated local action. He stated, "Disaster management requires the collective efforts of the government, response agencies and the public."
The state recognized the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) for their ongoing life-saving work. The SDRF Dimapur Unit took home the Best Performing SDRF Unit award, while HG T Nokyuh Konyak from the Mon unit earned a commendation certificate. Medozhalie Pienyii, Deputy Commandant General of Home Guards, Civil Defence and SDRF, addressed the crowd alongside musical performances and technical briefings. Officials emphasized that continuous training and frequent mock drills remain vital for state readiness as they pivot from emergency response toward long-term prevention.
