Kohima: Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority officials gathered at the Capital Convention Centre in Kohima on October 13 to mark the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. The 2026 event centered on the theme Resilience Starts at Home. It focused on shifting state priorities from reactive emergency response to active prevention and mitigation.
Landslides and floods strike Nagaland hard every monsoon. These events frequently destroy homes, roads, and farm fields. Z. Nyusietho Nyuthe, advisor for NSDMA and Inland Waterways, led the keynote address. He demanded better public awareness and a unified strategy to save lives. He stated, "disaster management requires collective efforts of the government, response agencies and the public, with preparedness and mitigation receiving equal attention alongside response and recovery."
Authorities honored standout members of the State Disaster Response Force during the event. The Dimapur unit took home the Best Performing SDRF Unit award. HG T. Nokyuh Konyak from the Mon district earned a commendation certificate. Medozhalie Pienyii, Deputy Commandant General of Home Guards, Civil Defence and SDRF, also addressed the crowd. The program featured a special song by the Kohima SDRF unit. Officers held technical sessions to share operational experiences from Mon and Dimapur to sharpen future response tactics.
