Kohima: Two men died Sunday while cleaning a deep ring well at a neighbor's property in Dimapur, Nagaland. The victims were 48-year-old Tongpangkumzuk and 26-year-old Panglong, both hailing from Longjang village in Mokokchung district. Fatal fumes likely caused the tragedy.
State Disaster Response Force officials arrived at the scene around noon following a distress call. The narrow, deep nature of the well hampered recovery efforts for the team. Rescuers finally pulled the bodies out at 2 pm.
SDRF team commander Havildar Yevuxu Swu suspects methane gas caused the deaths. These gases often build up in poorly ventilated, deep spaces where they displace oxygen. "The depth and narrow structure of the well made it difficult for rescuers to retrieve the bodies," Swu said. Police finished the necessary paperwork before releasing the bodies to the grieving families.
