Kohima: Police discovered the body of an unidentified man near the railway tracks in Dimapur on August 29. The man appeared to be between 40 and 45 years old. A memo from the Dimapur Railway Station Master alerted officers to the scene at 1.05 am. They found the body lying between KM 260/5 toward the Khatkhati side.
Officers rushed to the tracks. They conducted an inquest on the remains. Police suspect the man died after being run over by a moving train. "The cause of death was suspected to be the man being run over by a moving train, police said."
The team shifted the body to the District Hospital Dimapur morgue. Doctors will perform a post-mortem examination there. Authorities are now working to confirm his identity. In a separate incident on August 29, two students from Don Bosco Higher Secondary School were killed in a hit-and-run at Veterinary Colony in Burma Camp. Police identified the victims as 15-year-old Macagbou Charenamai and 17-year-old Gaisinlung Thangmei. Investigators report a Maruti Gypsy, allegedly driven by 25-year-old Bumei Phom, slammed into a motorcycle, a car, and a pickup auto before striking the two pedestrians. Phom was arrested and booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act.
The tragedy triggered an outcry from student groups including the DNSU, RSON, ZSUN, WNYF, and ZYOD. These organisations are demanding a clean investigation, claiming reports that the vehicle ran over the students after they had already fallen to the ground. Some groups have urged the state to invoke stringent charges and provide victim compensation, warning against any attempt to shield those responsible.

Police confirmed Machangbou Charenamai died at District Hospital Dimapur, while Gaisinlung Thangmei passed away during treatment at Nikos Hospital. Authorities also noted that the suspect, Bumei Phom, is the son of Yamthong Phom from Yaongyimchen village, Longleng district, and resides at Moa Colony in Burma Camp.
The Loachy Puchu clan of Yaongyimchen village issued a formal clarification correcting earlier reports that linked the suspect to Yachem village. They apologized to Yachem residents for the confusion.
Multiple organizations, including the DNSU, WNYF, ZYOD, TYOD, ZLSU, RSON, and ZSUN, have mobilized to condemn the tragedy. The groups are pushing for an impartial investigation into whether the victims were run over after they had already fallen to the ground. Several unions, including the ZYOD, alleged that a second individual involved in the incident remains at large. Calls for the state to provide victim compensation under the Victim Compensation Scheme are mounting as student groups demand the case remains free from political interference.
