ENPUK Demands Peace Following Deadly Kiphire Violence

Kohima: The Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Union Kohima (ENPUK) is demanding an immediate end to violence after a person died and several homes burned in Kiphire on October 10. Tensions remain high. The union warned that these acts threaten the region's long-term quest for stability and the establishment of the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority.

ENPUK officials pointed to the December 18, 2019, declaration by the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) that designated the area a Peace Zone. This pledge explicitly forbids arson, bloodshed, and intimidation. "Such act of violence has no place in a civilized society and directly undermines the long-cherished aspiration for peace and unity in Eastern Nagaland," the union stated in a press release.

The group insists that all community disputes must go through customary law or direct dialogue rather than brute force. They want no retaliation. ENPUK urged all village communities and individuals to exercise maximum restraint to prevent further escalation of the conflict. The union also extended its sympathies to the grieving family while calling for the safety of all those currently displaced by the incident.
