Guwahati: Assam has ordered the immediate release of school teachers whose mutual transfer applications received approval. This move follows the completion of the first phase of the 2026-27 Census. Teachers previously tied up with temporary census assignments are now back at their desks. The School Education Department wants these transfers finished fast to stop further administrative stalls.
Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced the directive on social media Sunday, September 20. The department has instructed officials to "initiate steps to release the teachers, who were under approval for mutual transfer under both Directorates" so they can join their new postings immediately. Directors must now push orders to all inspectors of schools and district elementary education officers to finalize the process.
One catch remains. The government is strictly enforcing election rules. "In the districts where MCC is in place, the teachers should be released after MCC is over," the order stated. Any teacher currently working in a district under the Model Code of Conduct for ongoing elections or bypolls must wait. They stay put until the code lifts.
