Assam College Teachers Walk Out Over Pension and Service Demands

Guwahati: Assam college teachers ditched their classrooms on October 30 to join a massive statewide protest. Educators gathered on campuses across the region to demand immediate action on long-standing service issues. They mean business.

At Juria College in Nagaon district, staff held a sit-in from 10:30 am to 12 noon. The Assam College Teachers' Association, or ACTA, organized the event. Similar demonstrations broke out at colleges throughout the state during those same morning hours.

Teachers want the government to scrap the National Pension System and bring back the Old Pension Scheme. They are also calling for the withdrawal of the controversial Office Memorandum 2013. The list of grievances runs deep.

The association is pushing for a permanent structure for government grants and the full implementation of UGC regulations. They also want the state to lift the retirement age to 65 years. The protesters signaled that their message is clear: "teachers urged the state government to address their demands" regarding these core employment benefits.
