Shillong: Shillong teachers are heading back to class, but the peace is fragile. The Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers’ Association ended its three-day mass casual leave this Wednesday. Members will resume work following an October 14 meeting, but they are watching the government closely. If long-pending dues for teachers, staff, and retirees stay unpaid after the Puja holidays, they will strike again.
Association President Boswell S. Pala slammed the state and the Education Department for allegedly misleading the group before and during the protest. He claimed repeated attempts to reach a settlement have gone nowhere. Pala wants a concrete resolution, not just another talk with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. He warned officials against continued stalling, stating, “Simply, we get our dues or we agitate.”
The association maintains this fight protects the broader deficit education system and the students who rely on it. Pala said the three-day walkout only hardened their resolve. The group plans to finalize its next move after reviewing the government response once the festivals conclude. Any further silence from the state will trigger a new round of agitation.
