Shillong: Primary school teachers across Meghalaya took to the streets of Shillong on Wednesday. Organized by the All Meghalaya Primary School Teachers Association, the protest moved from Golflink to the NPP office and the Chief Minister's bungalow. The march ended at the Golflink community hall. Teachers now threaten to close schools if their demands go unmet.
AMPSTA General Secretary FC Shullai confirmed the government addressed four minor demands. However, the association insists the protest will continue until all issues reach a resolution. The group thanked the government for retaining sanctioned posts in government and deficit schools. Still, they want immediate action on remaining grievances.
Shullai stated, "Sorkari aro deficit skulrango sanction ka·gimin post-rangko rakkiangkuna tik ka·ahani gimin chinga sorkariko mittela indiba bangki dabianirangkoba knachakchina aro aganchakaniko on·china chinga sorkario dabienga."
Teachers are still waiting for the regularization of sanctioned posts held by staff hired before 2007. They demanded a clear timeline for this process. The association also pushed for the full implementation of the Government Permanent Retirement Account Number. Shullai highlighted the ongoing issue with the Contributory Contributory Provident Fund. Teachers deposited 23 crore rupees into the State Bank of India Laitumkhrah branch. They currently receive their own contributions upon retirement but lack the interest earned on those funds.
Shullai said, "Uni gimin skigiparang badita sudrangko man·na nanga, chingna talate on·china chinga sorkario dabienga."
The association further demanded that the government assign extra teachers to single-teacher schools. They also called for an end to using teachers for census work and booth-level officer duties. The AMPSTA executive committee plans to meet in Tura soon to review the government response. Shullai warned that if the state fails to provide a satisfactory answer, they will escalate the agitation.
