Students Protest Land Grabbing at Assam High School

Guwahati: Students at Dekachang Regional High School in Sontoli hit the streets to demand the removal of illegal barricades on their campus. The school sits within the Chamaria Assembly constituency in Assam. They want their land back. The dispute centers on 67 lechas of property bought by the school from Haji Mahuruddin in 1988.

The school held the land for decades until the seller’s family moved to reclaim it with fences. Tensions flared during the protest. Allegations surfaced that someone threw petrol at the students and planned to set them on fire. These claims remain unverified and need a full investigation. Still, the incident left teachers and parents shaken.

School officials have already sent written complaints to the Samaria Revenue Circle Officer and the Boko Police Station. They are pushing for legal intervention to clear the property and protect their students from intimidation. The community insists that "members of the school community have called for measures to ensure the safety of students and prevent intimidation during protests over the land dispute."

Local authorities and the police have yet to issue an official statement on the standoff. The school administration continues to demand that the law step in to secure the site and address the safety threats immediately.
