Guwahati: Temporary staff at the National Institute of Technology Silchar returned to their indefinite hunger strike on August 27. Six employees are currently refusing food while the NIT Workers Union stages a sit-in nearby to show support. The workers previously halted their protest on August 10 after Barak Valley MLA Kishor Nath met with the dean and director on August 13. This meeting followed orders from the Chief Minister. Officials promised a resolution by August 24 but failed to deliver.
Protesters argue the administration continues to stall on job regularisation. They claim four separate Gauhati High Court rulings support their cause yet the institute ignores every mandate. Union leaders say they feel misled by empty promises from the authorities. One union member stated, "The agitation would continue until their demand for regularisation is fulfilled and the court judgments are implemented."
The union set a hard deadline of August 30 for a permanent fix. If leadership remains silent, the group threatens to ramp up the protest. They plan to trigger a mass movement involving family members if the institute refuses to act. The staff maintains their stance will not soften until they win full employment status.
