WWII-Era Shell Found in Jorhat Drain Sparks Alarm

Guwahati: A mortar-like object turned up in a Tokolai drain on Cemetery Road in Assam's Jorhat district Tuesday. Cleaning crews spotted the item during excavation work and called the police. Additional Superintendent of Police of Jorhat arrived to secure the scene. Panic gripped the neighborhood.

The metal object remains a mystery. Experts consider it a mortar shell, an artillery projectile, or a piece of rocket-propelled grenade ammunition. A bomb disposal unit from Dergaon traveled to the site. They moved the device to a secure location for lab testing. Experts think the object washed into the drain with river debris, though they have not ruled out that it is old military ordnance from the Second World War.

Police have asked locals to stay back. "Anyone coming across a similar object has been advised to inform the police immediately," officials stated. Authorities warned citizens against touching or moving any suspicious hardware found in the dirt. Experts need more time to determine the exact origin and state of the item.
