Aizawl: Mizoram officials issued 494,033 Inner Line Permits since the start of 2024. The Bairabi-Sairang railway line opened recently. It triggered a surge in travel. Home Minister K. Sapdanga confirmed that 215,946 of those permits were granted between September 2025 and July 2026. Current data shows 13,730 non-tribal workers living in the state with valid documentation.
The government is hunting down rule-breakers. Police caught 934 people this year who lacked the required entry papers. Officials charge these individuals under the Eastern Bengal Frontier Regulation Act of 1873. "Those found staying in Mizoram after their ILPs expire are booked at police stations under the Eastern Bengal Frontier Regulation (EBFR) Act, 1873," the minister stated in the state Assembly on Thursday.
Cases go to District Court. Judges decide if violators pay fines or face deportation. The Inner Line Permit remains a mandatory travel document for Indian citizens entering protected areas. The British government established these border controls in 1875 to regulate non-residents.
