Aizawl: Heavy rain dumped water and muck onto the Bairabi-Sairang railway tracks, forcing the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) to suspend operations. The trouble hit between Kawnpui and Mualkhang. NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma confirmed the move was a safety precaution. "The disruption was temporary," Sharma said.
Crews are working on restoration. Officials reported no landslides or track subsidence. However, the weather wreaked havoc on schedules. The Silchar-Sairang and Kolkata-Sairang Express trains stopped at Bairabi on September 30. The Bairabi-Sairang legs of those trips were cancelled. The Guwahati-Sairang Express also ended its run in Hailakandi. Passengers caught in the mess used 20 buses arranged at Bairabi to reach Aizawl and Sairang.
Several other trains face changes. The Sairang-Guwahati Express for September 30 and the Sairang-Silchar Express for October 1 are cancelled. The Sairang-Kolkata Express on October 1 will now start in Hailakandi. This 51.38-km line serves as a primary link for the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the ₹8,000 crore project on September 13, 2025.
Storms hammered the region starting September 30. Mamit saw 69.6 mm of rain, with Siaha hitting 46.5 mm and Tlabung recording 39 mm. Aizawl received 12.2 mm. Forecasters expect more rain, lightning, and thunderstorms across Mamit, Kolasib, Lunglei, and Aizawl districts on Thursday. Officials confirm no casualties occurred despite the weather across the state.
