Heavy Rains Sever Rail Link Between Assam and Mizoram

Aizawl: Heavy rain wrecked railway tracks near the border of Assam and Mizoram. The Northeast Frontier Railway reported soil erosion on September 3, forcing a total shutdown of the Katakhal-Bairabi section. Crews are working now. They are focused on the stretch between Jamira and Bairabi.

Disruptions rippled across the network. The Sairang-Guwahati Express stopped at Bairabi before returning to Sairang, leaving 900 passengers stranded. Railway officials deployed 16 buses to move those travelers toward Aizawl. The Silchar-Bairabi Passenger train ended its run at Jamira, while the Guwahati-Sairang train cut its trip short at Hailakandi. Authorities cancelled the Hailakandi-Sairang leg and scrubbed multiple September 4 services.

Railway staff are handing out water and snacks at Jamira, Bairabi, and Sairang stations. They also set up helpdesks at Guwahati, Lumding, Naharlagun, Badarpur, and Sairang to assist the public. The agency maintains that, "Efforts are underway to repair the damaged section and restore normal train operations at the earliest." Workers remain on the ground to stabilize the line and monitor the damage.
