Northeast Frontier Railway Restores Rail Link After Erosion Damage

Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway finished repairs on the Jamira-Bairabi stretch of the Katakhal-Bairabi section in just ten days. Torrential rain on September 3 triggered severe soil erosion. The washout damaged 70 metres of track formation and ate into the ground 40 metres from the track centre. Trains stopped running immediately.

Crews battled unstable ground and constant rain to reach the site. They moved heavy machinery and essential materials through difficult terrain. Engineers and field staff worked shifts around the clock to stabilize the area. The railway stated the, "rapid restoration demonstrated NFR’s efforts to maintain safe and reliable rail connectivity despite challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions."

A trial run passed the fitness test at 4:30 pm on September 12. A locomotive and one coach moved over the tracks successfully. The Silchar-Sairang Passenger, train number 55669, crossed the repaired section shortly after. Full service across the Katakhal-Bairabi section starts up again on September 13. NFR advised all passengers to check the IRCTC website or official social media accounts for current schedules before heading to the station.
