Aizawl: Mizoram will plug into the national gas pipeline network by 2027. State Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister B Lalchhanzova confirmed the timeline on October 26. The infrastructure is slated to reach Aizawl and Sihhmui by March or April 2028.
Lalchhanzova inspected the 119.45-km Panisagar-Aizawl gas pipeline in Mamit district. Indradhanush Gas Grid Ltd is building the line under the Northeast Gas Grid Project. The wider initiative covers 1,656 km across the region at a cost of Rs 9,265 crore. The state connects to this grid through Tripura Natural Gas Company Ltd.
The pipeline cuts through 15.10 km of Tripura across six villages and 104.34 km of Mizoram across 20 villages. This project promises to end the state's reliance on LPG for cooking. It also opens the door for CNG-powered vehicles. Piped gas will solve supply chain headaches during transit disruptions.
The minister urged contractors to move faster. He called for tight cooperation between the government, district officials, and local residents. Lalchhanzova said the project would reduce the state's dependence on LPG for cooking and could pave the way for the introduction of compressed natural gas for vehicles in Mizoram.
