Aizawl: Mizoram Education Minister Vanlalthlana announced plans to hire 100 regular primary teachers this year. He spoke on October 23 at the Mizoram Primary Teachers Association conference in Aizawl. The state sits at 31st place on the national Performance Grading Index. Poor learning outcomes triggered the move. The government needs better results.
To fix the gap, the state rolled out the Standardised Assessment for Elementary Schools. This program tests student comprehension rather than rote memorization. The Mizoram Board of School Education is also shifting gears on eligibility. They aim to let teachers with five or more years left on the clock take the Mizoram Teacher Eligibility Test before 2028. Officials want to run this test twice annually and might loosen assessment rules for current staff. "We are considering ways to ensure that everyone can qualify for the teacher eligibility test," the minister said.
The government already cleared 671 teacher appointments. They remain focused on the 100 primary positions. Meanwhile, the association pushed two new demands. They want Hindi taught in primary schools and computers for every primary classroom in the state.
