Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma opened Rs 5 crore worth of development projects at Government Champhai College on Friday. The funding arrived through the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan scheme. Construction began February 12, 2025 and finished in July 2026. The opening ceremony occurred during the college's year-end celebration.
The overhaul includes a new classroom building for Rs 3.70 crore. Crews also renovated the multipurpose hall and built a semi-running track, costing Rs 40 lakh each. Another Rs 50 lakh covers a solar plant, vocational training, and new IT and laboratory gear. Government Champhai College is one of two institutions in the state chosen for the first phase of the federal initiative.
Lalduhoma shared personal history during his speech. He noted his time as a student when he relied on primitive light sources. "I belonged to its first batch and had attended evening classes, studying by the light of a traditional oil lamp," he said. The college now serves 589 students with 32 regular faculty, five contractual teachers, 19 casual employees, one part-time staffer, and 15 non-teaching workers.
The administration added four assistant professors under RUSA and four more for the BCA program. Three contractual faculty members are also on board, with orders signed to regularize existing staff. Lalduhoma pledged another Rs 50 lakh for hostel extensions. He also promised support for a new parade ground and a retaining wall. The Chief Minister expects the site to serve as a university campus once Mizoram State University matures.
Beyond the college, Lalduhoma cited ongoing regional work. Crews are currently widening roads, fixing the District Jail, and building a Working Women's Hostel in Tlangrawt. The New Champhai Sports Complex also remains a top priority.
