Aizawl: Mizoram officials plan to bring more private schools under government control. This follows the successful provincialization of 51 institutions. School Education Minister Vanlalthlana shared the news during the monsoon session of the Mizoram Assembly on Tuesday.
The current Zoram People’s Movement government, led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, previously took over 12 Higher Secondary schools, 34 High schools, and five Elementary schools. The state Cabinet is currently reviewing plans for additional takeovers from a list of roughly 180 schools recommended by the previous administration.
Officials will judge high schools based on local enrolment numbers, proximity to existing state schools, and years in operation. Requirements will shift depending on the location. Schools inside the Aizawl Municipal Corporation and Lunglei Municipal Council face different rules than those in rural villages. The state might even count the number of households in a village to decide eligibility. “The criteria for further provincialisation have already been reviewed by the Cabinet,” Vanlalthlana said.
The 51 schools already taken over met strict standards from a January 2025 notification. Higher secondary schools needed a decade of grant-in-aid status, 80 percent pass rates, and set enrolment numbers. High schools and elementary schools also required a decade of operation and ownership of their buildings. The government expects to apply these lessons as it evaluates the next batch of schools for state funding.
