Guwahati: The North Eastern Council (NEC) shut the books on three major development projects in Assam this September. These efforts in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong cost Rs 11.55 crore. They focused on rural services and development. Specifically, the council finished work at the Lumbajong Development Block for Rs 4.97 crore, a project at Sarmen Hanse village costing Rs 1.97 crore, and a Rs 4.61 crore initiative at Chinthong Block.
These were part of 14 projects closed by the NEC across the region last month. The combined total for these closures hit Rs 45.48 crore. Beyond closing old work, the NEC poured new cash into the region. Assam grabbed Rs 4.42 crore for student hostels at Bineswar Brahma Engineering College in Kokrajhar and work with the Singpho community in Tinsukia. Across all northeastern states, the NEC pushed out Rs 35.21 crore, with another Rs 7.42 crore going to regional agencies.
Nagaland led state funding with Rs 11.92 crore for coffee production and a cultural complex for the Chakhesang tribe. Mizoram secured Rs 6.29 crore for infrastructure ranging from a Champhai auditorium to ginger farming. Sikkim landed Rs 4.17 crore for CCTV systems and a college hall. Arunachal Pradesh received Rs 3.40 crore for nursing facilities and tourism sites. Tripura and Manipur also pulled in funds for projects like eco-parks and medicinal plant records.
Regional groups also saw big wins. The NEC Bamboo Development Centre took Rs 2.88 crore. The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation got Rs 2.35 crore. NECTAR received Rs 1.24 crore for STEM labs. Major completions elsewhere included a Rs 9.28-crore cultural complex in Shillong and a Rs 9.17-crore youth center in Kohima. Other closed initiatives covered IT education and various technology programs. As noted in the reporting, the NEC successfully balanced regional investment, stating, "The projects focused on service delivery and rural development."
