Shillong: Meghalaya secured the top spot for federal funding in the Northeast. The North Eastern Council handed over Rs 26.56 crore to the state during October 2026. This cash flow came from a total pool of Rs 79.53 crore distributed under the Schemes of NEC and the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme.
Big money targets rural roads. Most of the state's allocation will fund the rehabilitation and strengthening of the 46.08-km Chokpot-Kharukol road. Officials expect this to aid 78 villages and improve life for 15,000 residents. The Council also bankrolled a multi-disciplinary training-cum-resource centre in Shillong.
The state beat out its neighbors in the payout race. Sikkim followed with Rs 15.51 crore, while Assam grabbed Rs 14.79 crore. Arunachal Pradesh walked away with Rs 11.18 crore, Nagaland received Rs 7.99 crore, and Tripura took Rs 3.50 crore. The Council also issued funds to Manipur and Mizoram for development initiatives. The NEC operates under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.
Beyond infrastructure, the agency reviewed progress on scientific, agricultural, and cultural projects across the region. Scientific progress hit a milestone in Shillong. North-Eastern Hill University recently wrapped up the "design and development of low-cost laboratory instruments."
