Shillong: The central government dropped Rs 688 crore into Meghalaya's coffers on November 5. The cash arrived five days ahead of the scheduled November 10 payment. Officials pushed the money out early to keep the state funded through the upcoming festive season. It helps the state government pay for ongoing development projects and welfare programs.
This payment is part of a massive nationwide transfer totaling Rs 1,09,019 crore. The government aimed this liquidity boost at states to help them pick up the pace on capital expenditure. As the Union Finance Ministry stated, the funds are intended to "help state governments accelerate capital expenditure and meet development and welfare-related requirements during the festivities."
Other states in the Northeast also grabbed a share of the national pot. Assam landed the biggest haul with Rs 3,552 crore. Arunachal Pradesh walked away with Rs 1,476 crore, while Tripura secured Rs 699 crore. Manipur received Rs 682 crore, Mizoram took Rs 615 crore, Nagaland netted Rs 524 crore, and Sikkim got Rs 365 crore.
