Congress Slams NPP Over Poaching Tactics Ahead of 2028 Elections

Shillong: Tura MP Saleng A. Sangma attacked the ruling National People’s Party on Thursday. He called the party desperate. The Congress leader pointed to the NPP’s aggressive poaching of elected members from other parties. These tactics target both rival groups and the party's own coalition allies. Sangma believes this behavior shows deep uncertainty within the ruling ranks before the 2028 Assembly elections.

The Tura MP raised concerns about the NPP's internal management. He questioned why the party feels the need to recruit leaders who already support the current government. The strategy suggests a push for dominance through forced expansion. Sangma noted the trend remains clear to outside observers. "The way the NPP is trying to deal with its own people raises questions. They are desperate. Why are they poaching every MLA or MDC? They are poaching even MLAs from within the same government. You can understand from the nature of the movement itself," Sangma said.

Discontent grows within the ruling fold. Sangma voiced sympathy for leaders who left Congress to join the NPP but failed to land Cabinet berths. He specifically noted the frustration of those passed over following the recent appointment of United Democratic Party leader Paul Lyngdoh as a minister. The distribution of power within the NPP remains a sticking point for many. While Sangma stopped short of predicting a mass exodus to Congress, he confirmed these moves spark ongoing speculation about future shifts. Legislators face tough personal choices. Political realignments appear likely before the next election cycle.
