Shillong: VIP culture continues to choke Shillong streets. On Thursday, a vehicle with license plate ML 01 A 0111 forced its way through the jammed Barik-Dhankheti stretch. It had a blaring escort vehicle in tow. Traffic was already moving at a snail’s pace. Commuters watched as the convoy shoved past while an ambulance struggled to find space from the opposite direction.
This incident mocks official promises to end preferential treatment for officials. Authorities previously claimed they would stop this behavior. The reality on the ground says otherwise. Residents are frustrated. The city suffers from heavy congestion every day. Experts argue that public roads belong to everyone, not just the elite. As one report noted: "Public roads are meant for everyone, and no VIP movement should come at the expense of public convenience or emergency access."
Accountability is non-existent. These VIP antics ignore basic road discipline and threaten the safety of patients inside ambulances. People spend hours waiting in traffic only to watch officials cut the line. These sirens are an insult to the average driver. Nobody knows if the government actually intends to change its habits. For now, the VIPs keep moving, and the city keeps waiting.
