Shillong: Traffic police hit a Shillong taxi driver with a Rs 5,000 fine after he sparked a city gridlock. The driver chose to sleep inside his cab during the morning rush. He was dead to the world on GS Road near Broadway.
Officers from the Sadar Traffic Branch spotted the stationary vehicle at 10:40 am on Wednesday. The car, a local taxi with license plate ML-05-Q-8884, blocked the road. The driver is 30-year-old Darren Ksar Lyngdoh of Nongrah Nonglum. Authorities hauled both man and machine to the traffic branch office.
Police suspect Lyngdoh was high. He allegedly slept through the obstruction due to suspected drug intake. The public alerted officials after a photo of the man slumped in his seat went viral online. Concerns over road safety mounted quickly.
The department is not stopping at a fine. Officials contacted the District Transport Officer to pull his driving license for good. As police noted, the incident reflects "the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs."
