Meghalaya High Court Demands Citizen Reporting Tool for Potholes

Shillong: The High Court of Meghalaya wants a dedicated website for citizens to upload photographs and live locations of road potholes. Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W. Diengdoh issued the order during a public interest litigation hearing on November 7 regarding the poor state of roads in the state.

The court warned that failure to fix these hazardous spots could lead to disciplinary action against maintenance crews or contractors. Officials must act fast. "In the meantime, all authorities to consider creation of a website on which citizens can upload photographs of the road where there are potholes, in order to enable the concerned authority to take note of the same and ensure its repair at the earliest, failing which appropriate action can be taken against the authority/contractor," the Bench stated.

The proposal directly targets the Public Works Department, the National Highways Authority of India, and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited. Legal counsel for these agencies must file affidavits outlining their plans before the next court date.
