Shillong: East Khasi Hills district officials are prepping Shillong for a massive seasonal tourist spike. Traffic jams look likely. Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal says the administration is working with the Superintendent of Police, traffic units, taxi unions, and homestay owners to keep the streets moving. He wants to balance visitor flow with resident needs.
“We are in close touch with SP and SP Traffic, homestay owners, taxi unions and others to ensure that the arrival of tourists does not lead to any inconvenience for people and tourists also get a good experience about Shillong,” Baranwal said. The rush typically kicks off with the Cherry Blossom Festival and keeps the state packed from December through mid-January.
Crews are also scrubbing the city clean. They are ripping down tangled, unsightly wires and cables from spots like Dhankheti and Laitumkhrah. The administration is also taking a look at urban flooding complaints. Officials recently cleared clogged drains across town, and the DC promised to investigate any new reports of drainage failure to prevent future backups.
