Shillong: The North Eastern Council (NEC) cut loose more than Rs 13.58 crore for Meghalaya throughout May and June 2026. This cash flow targets healthcare, education, renewable energy, and local infrastructure. The state plans to install a 1.5 Tesla MRI system at Tura Civil Hospital to help patients in the Garo Hills. It is a big win for local diagnostics.
Technical training also gets a boost. Money is flowing to Shillong Polytechnic for facility upgrades. NERCORMS will establish a multidisciplinary training-cum-resource centre to drive innovation. Cultural heritage remains a priority, with funding locked in for the Seng Khasi Cultural Complex and the Seinraij Jowai Community Hall.
Traders at Iewduh Market will see facility improvements soon. Meanwhile, the council is eyeing future power needs. They cleared money for surveys on the Mawblei, Myntdu Leshka Stage-II, and Selim hydroelectric projects. These studies will test if the sites can actually generate power.
The council officially wrapped up the Shillong-Umroi Airport Road project in June 2026. They noted the road is a "significant step towards improving airport access while boosting tourism, trade and regional connectivity."
Beyond Meghalaya, the NEC released an additional Rs 18.93 crore to various regional universities, NGOs, and societies. This funding supported the Industry Academia Research Conclave 2025 at NIT Meghalaya and the Miss & Mister Beauty Pageant 2026 at NEIGRIHMS, Shillong.
