Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the state's first block-level CM Connect Centre in Sohiong on July 18. He simultaneously pushed forward development projects worth over Rs 146 crore. The event, held at Mawtap Pyllun Ground, included Community and Rural Development Minister Sosthenes Sohtun and local MLA Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah.
Sangma dedicated eight completed projects worth Rs 5.48 crore to the public. He also laid foundation stones for nine new initiatives totaling Rs 140.74 crore. “Today is a special day for Sohiong as eight projects worth Rs 5.48 crore are being dedicated to the people, while foundation stones for nine projects worth Rs 140 crore are being laid. This reiterates our commitment to ensure development reaches every village and every citizen of the state,” Sangma said.
The Chief Minister broke tradition by inviting Pyntngenlang Nongrang, a former 1st Assam Regiment sepoy, to open the new block office. Sangma then registered the center's first public grievance. Other completed works include the Block Integrated Development Office, a Block Resource Centre, digital libraries for 13 villages, a plastic waste management unit at Marpna, and marketing centers in Nongur and Jamynthlen. The government also provided an agricultural transport vehicle for Mawthwan IVCS.
New infrastructure includes the Rs 34.53 crore Greater Sohiong Water Supply Scheme and the Rs 80.02 lakh Dewlieh Mawrisnai Flow Irrigation Project. Tourism projects totaling Rs 83.2 crore focus on Kynroh and Sohiong viewpoints, a tree house and amphitheatre at Nongkasen, Lyngwa Waterfalls infrastructure, and a hotel at Lum Diengiei. Road works valued at Rs 20.58 crore cover the Kynton Mynnar-Nongpathaw route and the Mawlaingut-Lawmei road.
During a public interaction, residents discussed water shortages, soil erosion, sports facilities, and education. Officials noted that two cold storage units are being built in Lawmei, with solar-powered storage planned for Krang. Regarding education, Sangma confirmed six schools are complete under Mission Education, with Phase IV starting soon. The government also distributed over Rs 23 lakh to Self-Help Groups, Rs 20 lakh to Village Organisations, and sanctioned over Rs 4.13 crore for Cluster Level Federations.
