Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma launched the state's first block-level CM Connect Centre in Sohiong on Saturday. He combined the event with a massive push for local infrastructure. The government dedicated eight projects worth Rs 5.48 crore and laid foundations for nine more worth Rs 140.74 crore.
Sangma shook up local politics by letting Pyntngenlang Nongrang, a former 1st Assam Regiment sepoy from Nongur village, inaugurate the new Block Integrated Development Complex. The facility cost Rs 2.77 crore. "Government buildings should be inaugurated by members of the community. That honour makes the occasion far more meaningful than when it is done by dignitaries," Sangma said.
New projects focus on diverse needs. Tourism investments hit Rs 83.2 crore, covering Kynroh and Sohiong viewpoints, a tree house at Nongkasen, and a premium hotel at Lum Diengiei. The state also greenlit the Rs 34.53 crore Greater Sohiong Water Supply Scheme and the Rs 80.02 lakh Dewlieh Mawrisnai Flow Irrigation Project. Other infrastructure includes roads worth Rs 20.58 crore, a plastic waste management unit, and digital libraries for 13 villages.
During the CM Connect interaction, residents pressed officials on water shortages, soil erosion, and agricultural needs. The government promised priority for the CM Solar Mission and noted that cold storage facilities are under construction at Lawmei. Education upgrades remain a priority, with Phase IV of Mission Education set to start soon.
The state distributed significant financial aid during the event. Self-help groups received over Rs 23 lakh, while village organizations got Rs 20 lakh. Cluster Level Federations saw sanctions exceeding Rs 4.13 crore. Sangma emphasized that the CM Connect platform serves as a vital bridge between citizens and administrative action.
