Shillong: The Khasi National Dorbar reached a century of service this week. The group marked its 103rd anniversary on Friday in Mawkhar. President Laborious Manik Syiem hoisted the organization's flag to honor the group's 1923 founding. He used the milestone to demand better unity among the Hynniewtrep people. The organization remains a pillar for local traditional leaders.
Syiem addressed the crowd at the Dorbar premises. He told them to stop finger-pointing and start fixing internal flaws. "The hoisting of the flag today is to remember the year when the organisation was established and to look back and see where we have weakened and where we have remained strong. We should identify the areas where we have weakened and work to strengthen them, rather than pointing fingers or blaming one another," he said.
The group was originally titled the Khasi Nation. Leaders formed the Dorbar to link Syiems, Lyngdohs, and Basans under one banner when the region acted as a semi-independent state. Today, Syiem wants the youth to look beyond basic government jobs. He pushed for careers in agriculture and other sectors to help the state grow. Traditional elders, women, and children attended the event to celebrate the long history of the Dorbar.
