Mizoram Activates New Emergency Disaster Radio Network

Aizawl: Mizoram officials flicked the switch on a new emergency communication network this Tuesday in Aizawl. Agriculture Minister PC Vanlalruata launched the Public Safety and Disaster Response Communication System to keep rescue teams talking during major outages. The setup keeps the State Disaster Response Force, police, and fire services linked even when the grid dies.

The system relies on a Digital Mobile Radio Tier-III trunking setup in Aizawl. Remote districts like Kolasib, Champhai, and Lunglei use Tier-II conventional networks. A secondary Mission Critical Communication System uses 4G and 5G to blanket the state. All data routes through the State Emergency Operation Centre in Aizawl. Dispatchers can hit every radio at once. The hardware logs calls and tracks responders via GPS.

Sushil Singh, Special Secretary for Disaster Management and Rehabilitation, said the network was particularly important for Mizoram. He demanded tight coordination between deputy commissioners and his department to keep the system running. Officials equipped the network with solar power and fuel-cell hybrids. These backups keep the signal alive for 100 hours without municipal electricity.

Vanlalruata pushed for strict maintenance and frequent drills. He told staff to treat the system like a lifeline. "The network would strengthen coordination between government agencies and voluntary organisations during major disasters," he said.
