Shillong: The Meghalaya government is weighing a plan to set up a tourist pick-up point at Kyrdemkhla for visitors arriving in vehicles registered outside the state. Under this proposed system, tourists would switch to local taxis to finish trips to Sohra, Dawki, and other popular spots.
Tourism Department Special Secretary K.L. Nongbri inspected a three-acre plot at the site on Tuesday. He walked the land alongside representatives from the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association and the Kyrdemkhla Dorbar Shnong. The move follows meetings led by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar. Local drivers want out-of-state cars to drop fares at fixed hubs to protect their work.
Officials included hoteliers, homestay owners, and tour guides in earlier talks. Now, Nongbri will file a report for the government to review. The department’s Executive Engineer is currently drafting a design and cost estimate for the facility. If approved, this will act as the first phase of a broader transport plan.
AKMTTA president Ricaldison Dohling confirmed the state government is looking into their request. He noted that other sites might follow. "The government had agreed to consider the association’s proposal and that additional pick-up points could be developed later." No final decision has been reached yet.
