Shillong: Meghalaya is betting big on travel. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira launched a suite of projects to grow the state economy. They kicked off the PRIME Meghalaya Motorcaravan scheme, a branch of the wider ELEVATE program. This initiative helps entrepreneurs get into the motorcaravan business by covering 50 percent of project costs through upfront capital and EMI co-payments.

The state wants to reach visitors looking for wildlife, pilgrimage, and ecotourism. These caravans offer transport and beds in remote areas where hotels are scarce. Government officials invited entrepreneurs to apply for the aid, noting that the plan helps by lowering the financial burden and improving bank credit access. The scheme fits into a broader strategy to grow local businesses.

Shillong got a face-lift too. Ward’s Lake features a new entrance and a high-tech drinking water facility. This sustainable system pulls moisture from the air using a 10-micron aluminium mesh. Water then flows through ozonisation, UV sterilisation, and ultrafiltration. Government leaders also added a new Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation bus to the fleet to move tourists around the region more effectively.

Other additions include the inauguration of the Meghalayan Age Pavilion and fresh venture spaces for PRIME-backed startups. The state is also pushing local fruit wine. As Sangma put it, these measures are intended to "connect tourism development with local entrepreneurship and the promotion of Meghalaya’s cultural identity." The goal remains simple: expand travel options and create more jobs for residents.
