Shillong: Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira confirmed that visitor numbers are climbing again. The industry stalled last month after local tensions boiled over. Drivers on both sides of the border halted traffic in a tit-for-tat blockade. Assam cabbies launched the move after KSU bike rallies in Shillong ended with damaged vehicles, including several with Assam registration plates. Meghalaya drivers quickly retaliated by blocking access points at Byrnihat and Umiam.
Disruptions caused a clear dip in travel. The minister noted the shift in momentum. “The situation has become normal and tourists have started coming,” Shira said. Officials settled the dispute earlier this month. Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar met with Assam Cabinet Minister Atul Bora to strike an amicable deal. Traffic now flows freely across the border.
