Guwahati: Transport workers at the Jorabat entry point began blocking Meghalaya-registered vehicles on Thursday, August 20. The standoff follows widespread violence during a Khasi Students’ Union motorcycle rally in Shillong the previous day. Workers vowed to stop all Meghalaya traffic until the unrest is resolved. Security forces now maintain a heavy presence at the border.

Wednesday’s rally in Shillong turned volatile. Masked individuals allegedly attacked private, government, and Assam-registered vehicles. Witnesses reported protesters shouting pro-KSU slogans. Some vehicles were set on fire. Several people suffered injuries during the chaos.

A family from Assam traveling toward Shillong faced a violent encounter during the rally. Attackers smashed their windows, windshield, and rear glass without warning. The child inside the car suffered injuries from shattered glass. In a viral video documenting the damage, the father stated, "They attacked our vehicle out of nowhere. My child was inside and has been injured. Glass pieces pierced him."

The incident has triggered panic among tourists and commuters. Assam-based cab drivers and transport unions condemned the assaults and demanded accountability. They warned that the safety of passengers remains at risk. While several videos of the vandalism have surfaced, police have yet to confirm the identities or organizational affiliations of the attackers. Authorities continue to monitor the border as the investigation into the violence unfolds.
