Meghalaya Mourns Death of First Khasi Woman Chief Secretary Rebecca Suchiang

Shillong: Meghalaya is mourning the death of Rebecca V. Suchiang. She was the first Khasi woman to serve as the state's Chief Secretary. A 1988-batch IAS officer, Suchiang built a reputation as a trailblazer in civil service before she retired. Her loss hit the state hard.

South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai honored her legacy on Wednesday. He praised her as a protector who served the state with integrity. Shullai remembered her as a sharp orator who refused to mince words. He stated that she would always "call a spade a spade." The MLA also highlighted her commitment to helping the poor and weaker sections of society.

The Lympung Ki Seng Kynthei organization also joined the tributes. President Theilin Phanbuh called Suchiang’s career a major milestone in local history. She noted that Suchiang proved women can hit the top levels of government through hard work. Her passing creates a void for women in leadership. Shullai offered his condolences on behalf of his family and the state government. Lympung Ki Seng Kynthei sent sympathies to the relatives as well.
