Minister Shullai Urges Meghalaya Voters to Give BJP Five Years

Shillong: Senior BJP leader and Cabinet Minister Sanbor Shullai wants a mandate. He is asking voters to hand the saffron party a five-year term during the 2028 Assembly elections. The South Shillong representative spoke to a crowd in Mawlai on Friday. He insists the state should test the BJP after decades of Congress and regional rule.

"Give the BJP only five years. You have allowed the Congress and regional parties to lead the state. If we fail to deliver, you can vote us out in the next election," Shullai said. He points to the Centre's performance over the last 12 years as proof of the party's ability to drive progress. The BJP's state Assembly presence has grown from two to 10 MLAs after eight UDP legislators joined the fold. Still, Shullai says the party needs a full mandate to seize real power.

Shullai also dismissed claims that the BJP acts against Christians. He recalled fearmongering during his 2018 campaign, which suggested he would burn churches or attack beef eaters. He noted his constituency stayed peaceful. The minister also voiced frustration regarding his cabinet portfolio, stating he wanted the Sports and Youth Affairs role to better serve Meghalaya. He maintains he acts as a direct link to the Centre, declaring, "I can proudly say that I am the youngest son of Prime Minister Narendra Modi."

He pointed to sports progress in Assam as a model for what Meghalaya could achieve. He cited land grants for boxer Lovlina Borgohain and planned training academies as proof that political alignment works. Shullai welcomed the new BJP Mandal in Mawlai and urged the state to choose his party to reach new heights.
