Shillong: Chamberline B Marak is dead. The veteran Congress leader and former Meghalaya minister passed away at a hospital in Tura this Wednesday at 80 years old. He had been sick for some time. Marak was a fixture in Meghalaya politics during the 1990s, serving alongside former Chief Minister Salseng C Marak.
He built a reputation for his literary mind and deep grasp of English literature. Voters sent him to the Assembly from the Bajengdoba constituency in North Garo Hills multiple times. This seat was once part of East Garo Hills. Marak won his final election there in 2008. While he held several cabinet posts, colleagues often pointed to his time as education minister as his biggest impact on the state.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma shared his condolences following the news. He noted the personal connection the deceased shared with his father, former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A Sangma. "The two leaders had worked together in the Congress and served the party in various capacities during their political careers," Sangma said.
