Guwahati: State Goods and Services Tax officials targeted a hardware businessman in Bongaigaon district for alleged tax evasion. A 12-member team stormed the Chalantapara residence of Dhaneswar Mandal, also known as Dhoinya, to seize business records. Mandal skipped town. He shuttered his shop, Assam Hardware, in Kabaitari and fled immediately after learning about the impending raid.

Investigators spent the day combing through Mandal's home and his empty storefront. They confiscated multiple documents to determine the total amount of unpaid taxes. The department claims Mandal operated his business for a long time without paying his share to the state. Officials noted, "The department is expected to examine the seized documents and other records to ascertain the extent of any alleged tax evasion."

Authorities are now digging into Mandal’s finances. Reports suggest the businessman holds significant assets across the region. Investigators will finish reviewing the paperwork before deciding on the next steps in the case.
