Guwahati: Assam Cabinet Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah gathered officials in Bongaigaon on Monday, July 20, to plot a crackdown on tax dodgers. He wants results. The state will launch a coordinated enforcement drive on August 1 to stop the illegal movement of untaxed goods.
The meeting took place at the Bongaigaon District Commissioner office. It drew Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police from Bongaigaon, Chirang, Kokrajhar, and Dhubri. Representatives from the Forest, Taxation, and Transport departments joined local hardware traders and transport operators to discuss the crackdown.
Authorities are targeting private vehicles and buses hauling goods into the state without paying legal duties. Joint inspections will sweep the region next month. Baruah warned of swift consequences for those breaking the law. "The State government would launch a coordinated enforcement drive from August 1 to curb tax evasion and illegal transportation of goods," Baruah said.
He demanded better compliance from traders and transporters. Revenue loss hurts everyone. Beyond tax issues, the Minister confirmed the government is still tracking the state's ongoing flood crisis and pushing out relief to hard-hit areas.
