Guwahati: State Goods and Services Tax officials slapped Jain Store with a penalty approaching Rs 2 crore after a grueling raid in Dhubri town. The business owner already paid Rs 1.5 crore. The rest is due soon.

A team from Guwahati descended on the Dhanpatti trading shop between October 7 and October 12. Local Dhubri officials helped. The squad hit five warehouses linked to the shop during the week-long operation. Then they moved to the boss's house in Ward No. 2 to dig through files. They seized a desktop, account books, and financial records.

Jain Store stocks everything from cumin and dates to seasonal firecrackers. Officials kept quiet during the search. "Senior SGST officials did not issue a formal public statement during the operation," sources confirmed. The department is currently processing the final penalty through its digital systems. Tax authorities have not yet revealed the exact nature of the financial errors discovered in the data.
