Four Accused in Advocate Parading Case Released on Bail

Shillong: Four people arrested for parading a senior advocate through Shillong are now free on bail. Meghalaya Advocate General Amit Kumar confirmed the release in an affidavit submitted to the High Court on Wednesday. Police registered an FIR following the incident and gathered CCTV footage to aid the ongoing investigation.

The court reviewed the case diary provided by the Investigating Officer. The matter follows a complaint from the Secretary General of the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association on behalf of both the High Court and Shillong Bar associations. Last month, the court raised alarms about the attack on the lawyer, who faced separate allegations of molesting a female law intern inside his chamber. Judges previously noted, "prima facie, that the police had failed to act, thereby allowing lawlessness to continue."

Legal proceedings remain active. Senior counsel HL Shangreiso represents the Bar Council of Meghalaya and must submit a reply detailing the group's response before the next hearing. Meanwhile, service of notice for the Bar Council of India remains incomplete. The court granted leave for petitioners to serve the council by private notice.
