Shillong: Two major Meghalaya legal groups want Advocate General Amit Kumar out. The Meghalaya High Court Bar Association and the Shillong Bar Association filed a joint demand with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. They have no faith in him. More than 400 members voted unanimously on August 5 to strip Kumar of his membership.
The feud started over an August 3 hearing for WP (C) No. 350/2026. Kumar allegedly claimed the associations failed to protect women lawyers or handle sexual harassment claims properly. The lawyers denied this. They asked for proof but got nothing. The underlying case actually involved non-state actors who attacked a lawyer and paraded him through a market after molestation claims involving an intern.
The associations also slammed the government for hiring expensive, non-local lawyers instead of skilled locals. They want a total audit of these appointments and a new, fair hiring system. Things got worse on August 17 when the associations challenged the Supreme Court Bar Association for backing Kumar. They accused the national body of pushing a "one-sided narrative" that hurts local autonomy.
The groups gave the state government one week to act. They want a clean break to save the local legal system.
