Police on High Alert as VPP Plans Protest March to Meghalaya Secretariat

Shillong: Tensions rise in Shillong. Police are on high alert as the Voice of the People Party prepares for a protest march to the Meghalaya Secretariat this Thursday at 11 am. Supporters from districts including Jaintia Hills and West Khasi Hills will gather at the Civil Hospital area and Motphran before marching.

VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit demanded discipline from his ranks. He warned that the party will take action against anyone trying to hijack the demonstration. "The party had consciously chosen the democratic path of protest despite its disappointment and anger over what it described as the government’s failure to address several issues concerning the people of Meghalaya," Basaiawmoit said.

The march targets government indifference. The VPP list of grievances includes the Lumpongdeng Island project, job recruitment irregularities at the MPSC and DSCs, and the spread of coke and cement plants. They also want more protection for land rights and local entrepreneurs.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma rejected the venue choice. He directed the party to bring their complaints to the floor of the Assembly instead of the streets. Security officials, including the DGP and the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, met to review safety plans. The government claims its doors remain open for discussion.
