Adelbert Nongrum Defies VPP Suspension, Claims Membership

Shillong: North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum is refusing to quit the Voice of the People Party. He remains a member despite a recent high command move to suspend him. Nongrum blasted the party leadership on Monday for what he described as an illegal and unconstitutional disciplinary action.

The legislator claims the party failed to follow proper protocol. He insists the leadership did not stick to due process before moving against him. "I am still with VPP, but the leadership suspended me without following due process. Till date, I maintain that it is an illegal and unconstitutional suspension," he said.

Nongrum pointed to specific technical errors in the suspension order. The party addressed him as Adelbert Nongrum Jaiaw Umsyntiew instead of recognizing his status as the elected MLA for the North Shillong constituency. He warned that this mistake would trigger major embarrassment if brought before a court of law. He has no plans to jump ship and currently intends to run on a VPP ticket in the 2028 Assembly elections.

The MLA has already pushed back against the party inside the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. The Speaker initially moved his seat following the party order, but reversed the decision the next day after Nongrum raised a formal objection. The lawmaker maintains he will not accept any action pushed through these improper channels.
