Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma marked the first death anniversary of former chief minister Dr. Donwa Dethwelson (DD) Lapang on September 13. He hailed the veteran politician as the Architect of Ri-Bhoi district. Lapang died at 91 at Bethany Hospital in Shillong on September 12, 2025.
Sangma took to social media to reflect on his predecessor's legacy. He called him a true people's leader. "His vision for the people of Meghalaya will always be cherished, and we will always take guidance from his wisdom," Sangma wrote.
Lapang shaped state politics for five decades. Born on April 10, 1934, in Ri-Bhoi, he started his career as a road labourer and later worked as a Sub-Inspector of schools. He entered the political arena as an independent candidate in 1972. He eventually joined the Congress party.
The veteran leader served as chief minister four times between 1992 and 2010. He held the Nongpoh assembly seat for years. Following disputes over the treatment of senior members, he left the Congress in 2018. He then joined the National People's Party.
Lapang remained active in government affairs until he retired as an adviser to the state in October 2024 at age 90. Former MP Vincent H Pala previously honored him as a mentor and father figure. Leaders across the political spectrum continue to praise his humility and deep ties to the local public.
